Sustainable manufacturing took a giant step forward with the opening of MycoWorks South Carolina, the largest mycelium materials factory in the world. It also marked a revival of the local textile economy. In collaboration with state & regional officials, we introduced MycoWorks to Union County, SC with a vision of sustainable, community-focused job creation for an emerging industry. We recruited hundreds of new employees under this mission ready to be trained in new manufacturing technologies.
MycoWorks’ success was built on producing sustainable biomaterials of the highest quality. Its partnership with the revered luxury leather tannery, Curtidos Badia, was critical in shaping its Reishi™ mycelium leather into an industry-leading textile. The partnership was an important story of industry transformation, as MycoWorks worked closely with Curtidos Badia to adapt centuries-old practices into a sustainable, chrome-free tanning process for premium mycelium materials.
Considerable media attention spurred MycoWorks’ ascent to the top of the biomaterials industry. We celebrated each of these moments as milestones to enhance our storytelling as leaders in the burgeoning sustainability economy.
